This tour of the English Cricket team has provided a much-needed break to a number of Pakistanis from the intoxicating and inconclusive news talks of 8 pm. Sports and games serve as the agent of peace and global cooperation. Cricket is serving the same purpose in Pakistan. Cricket teams from around the world have raised their voice to support the flood victims of Pakistan. At the same time, Pakistani fans have equally supported the guest team. In the final match, I saw a sizable crowd supporting the cricketing shots of Harry Brooks and David Malan. Even, the spectators were waving the flag of the English team. This is such a warm indication for a nation like Pakistan, whose diverse population needs this kind of atmosphere of acceptance and inclusiveness.

In a time when Pakistan is facing economic downfall compounded by political instability, such sort of activities is a welcome sign as this nation deserves such entertaining and healthy activities. It’s not easy to say but I believe cricket can play a role in bringing the governments of Pakistan and India to the negotiating table. The cricket enthusiasts are eager to see the classy cover drives of Virat Kohli at GSL.

Cricket may be a popular game but it’s not fair to ignore other sports and games at the cost of Cricket. The diverse nation of 220 million, which is always growing, should represent its country in a number of sports and games like Hockey, Football, Snooker, Squash, Chess, and others. The security for the FIFA World Cup, which will be held in Qatar, is being handled by Pakistan’s Armed Forces. How lovely it would have been if the green shirts had participated in the competition.

The provincial governments should provide the facilities for sports and games at the Union Council level. Empowered local governments can play a crucial role in this cause. The youth of this nation, comprising almost 40pc of the total population, contains the potential to lift trophies and win gold in various sports and competitions if given the right opportunity. Cricket is a good example in this regard.
